My lovely friend Andrea from the Willow Cottage Quilt Company and I cordially invite you to join us as we don our Easter bonnets and best dresses for our nostalgic new block of the month programme...
Spring Cottage is our sixth Block of the Month programme and will run for eight months, from January until August, 2025. Block of the Month participants will receive an exclusive early access pattern book and lovingly packaged kits containing everything they need to create the nine original Spring Cottage sampler blocks and an exquisite pieced border, with my favourite techniques, which include conventional machine-piecing, creating angles with placement templates and simple embroidery. We include any little extras you will need and, as always, we're looking forward to treating you to a few lovely surprises.
The programme also includes: a special password-accessed blog posts, where I'll celebrate the rural traditions that inspired my blocks; exclusive filmed tutorials to guide you through each new technique, share our favourite tips and help you make a success of piecing your blocks; and the choice of a full kit, rather than the monthly parcels, delivered at the beginning of the programme.
We're always looking for new ways to enhance your block-of-the-month experience, so this year we are moving our community forum and filmed tutorials away from social media and on to our own dedicated website.
My inspiration for this year's quilt is a real place: Spring Cottage was the beloved home of Shropshire poet and novelist Mary Webb. She spent many happy hours tucked under her veranda reflecting on the garden she'd created and the ravishing view over the Shropshire Hills.
We'll be creating a quilted spring garden to feather our nests with, brimming with flower-filled teacups and fresh eggs for breakfast eggs, a mother goose and a March hare, teeny chicks and tiny leverets, all garlanded with daisies and forget-me-nots.
The quilt will finish at approximately 70" square and this year we'll be sewing with a selection of Tilda Fabric's delightful new seasonal basics collection, Creating Memories, in fresh, springy shades of soft pink, silvan green, sunny yellow, sky and duck-egg blue, combining classic florals, ginghams and polka dots.
When choosing the colour palette for this year's quilt I imagined Mary laying the table for tea on Easter Sunday: filling a pretty vase with garden flowers, taking her favourite treasures from the china cabinet and embroidered tray cloths from the linen cupboard.
